Arsenal defender Gabriel has explained why he frequently clashes with Erling Haaland during games against Manchester City. In the last two campaigns, while their two clubs have battled intensely for the Premier League title, Haaland and Gabriel have also come to blows on a number of occasions.
Earlier this season, Haaland threw a ball at the back of Gabriel's head in the wake of John Stones' late equaliser before telling Mikel Arteta to "stay humble" which has since become the proverbial catchphrase of the 2024/25 campaign.
They were playing at home, so their duty was to win the match, but our team did really well to resist. It’s a battle, a war, so it’s normal to have provocative acts in football, it’s part of the game. Now this is over and we are waiting for them at our ground.”
That major warning from the Brazil international was certainly well-placed as Arsenal went on to beat Man City 5-1 at Emirates Stadium earlier this month. Though Haaland did score at a crucial moment, the Gunners hit four after that with Myles Lewis-Skelly copying Haaland's celebration after his goal.
After Martin Odegaard had put the hosts in front after just a few minutes, Gabriel shouted in his direction before running off to celebrate with his teammates. The duo also clashed at full-time with Haaland aiming a jibe at the Gunners man.
And though it would seem the pair despise one another, Gabriel has seemingly explained it is all done because of how much he respects Haaland's ability. Speaking to Arsenal's official website, he said. “Yes it (big games) makes me comfortable, because I need to put myself in the best position and the best shape.
“I need to show up, to be present in those moments. If I'm playing against Haaland for example, l'm not going to be quiet because I know how good he is - no, I need to be there, put myself at an even higher level and try to win every duel.”
