Jamie Carragher insists the contributions of Cody Gakpo have gone unnoticed for Liverpool this term as he continues to chip in with valuable goals whilst title rivals Arsenal struggle for goals
Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal "must wish" they had a frontman like Cody Gakpo with the Liverpoolstar continuing to produce.
The Dutchman is one of a number of attackers on the books at Anfield and all have had to play their role. Arne Slot has continued to shuffle his front three with Mohamed Salah the only one guaranteed of his spot. Gakpo though has continued to find the net when called upon.
Despite not being a weekly starter he's still scored on 16 occasions, notching against the likes of Manchester City. Arsenal meanwhile have struggled in the final third and Gakpo's 16 goals would have him top of the scoring charts were he at the Emirates.
Mikel Arteta's attacking resources will be tested in the final months of the season with Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz ruled out for the remainder of the campaign. They failed to land any firepower in January and Carragher concedes having a squad player who could contribute like Gakpo would've been huge for the north Londoners.
He wrote in the Telegraph: "Whoever falls short this season will be asking themselves if they could have done a little more in the summer and January transfer windows. It is sure to dominate the post-season discussion at Anfield and the Emirates if there are just a few points between first and second. I am not convinced either club truly grasped the nettle with recruitment to maximise their chances.
"Arsenal supporters have been concerned since the start of the year that they do not have the necessary firepower. How Arteta must wish he had someone of the calibre of Cody Gakpo in his squad, the Dutchman’s 16 goals in this campaign going under the radar."
Gakpo is one of three Liverpool men in double figures. Luis Diaz has 13 whilst Mohamed Salah scored his 29th goal in all competitions in midweek as he leads the race for the Golden Boot.
